Panigale S is €23990 in Italy, $22995 in the US. So I would expect US pricing for the Energica to be closer to $18-20k. Or perhaps more likely, by the time 2015 rolls around the price will have gone up to €25k and $25k.

BRD is saying is that they can deliver approximately the same amount of (kinetic) energy to the ground as a typical gas bike could by combusting 1 gallon of fuel. As your buddy says.

33.7 kWh is the lower-heating value (LHV) of the thermal energy contained in a gallon of gasoline. That means if you combust 100% of the fuel (and don't for example blow unburned hydrocarbons out the exhaust) and also exhaust the heated water vapor (hence the lower part of LHV, IE you're wasting all the heat energy in the water vapor) then you get that much thermal energy.

A typical gas engine might be around 20% efficiency, though this varies hugely by engine design and operating point (RPM, load). This means the engine turns 33.7 kWh thermal energy into 6.7 kWh kinetic energy, at the engine output shaft. Then figure 85% powertrain efficiency from the motor output shaft to the ground = 5.7 kWh kinetic energy at the rear wheel.

Honestly, the only problem I had with the whole show was the fact they were following with a chase vehicle towing a generator. It's clear an EV can cross the country. You want to set a new record doing it? Set it using in place charging stations. I can go out here and get a couple of auxiliary fuel tanks for my truck, pile 3 people in it, and drive basically non-stop across country without having to stop for fuel and set a new record for crossing the country while driving the speed limit.

As far as the timing situation goes, I actually think it's a good move. Say they did this on a normal week/weekend. Maybe they get mentioned somewhere in the news. But who is paying attention? Now look at when they're doing it again. Even if they only get a 10 second mention in the news, EVERYONE who is interested in such things are glued to the news looking for information about the big events happening that everyone knows about. I wager they get more penetration of coverage to their target audience this way than if they'd scheduled this while nothing else was happening.

For the record. Terry told me his motor had something like 25k miles on it, and the bearings let go because the sprocket setscrew working out and rubbing, not heat or lack of airflow or anything else. It was replaced by Zero under warranty - which is unlimited 2 years (the bike is 1 yr old). I'm certain that Motenergy would stand behind the motor for longer than that, based on what they've done in the past for me personally and other I know.

And seriously? Your comment about "piss poor timing" on Terry's page is ridiculous. These guys are doing what they can do, when they can do it. This ain't a TV show for your convenience. I don't see anything "valid" about the point, other than kind of whining. Moto Electra did a press release on May 14, and Terry made a last minute decision: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2013/5/prweb10729441.htm IOM was out there for all to see, and cover, and listen to live via Manx Radio. Once we all learned about the various events it didn't take too much to "cover" them.

And how about Shelina kicking ICE ass? You kind of left that out. http://evmc2.wordpress.com/2013/06/04/crazy-week-in-electric-motorcycling/

It was an awesome, and exciting week in Electric Motorcycling, and there wasn't one single thing to whine about.
